Vintage Wooden Minstrel Style Bones with Case and Set List
Matched set of 4, well worn but excellent condition (one bone with chip)
These vintage bones were acquired in February, 2014 from a seller in Fenton, Michigan.
The set appears to be
black stained hardwood, probably maple,
and quite similar to several other pairs we have seen over the years.
They are well-worn but in excellent condition. (One bone has a one-inch chip missing from the end.) At least two of the bones show remnants of what might be burnt cork residue. Can't say for sure, but it's quite possible this set was originally purchased via mail-order from a specialty supply house that served the amateur minstrel show market.
Included with the set is a "bones case" (actually an eye-glasses clip-on case) from an optometrist in Houghton, Michigan. Stuffed inside the case we found a set list from a minstrel show. The set list has been carefully unfolded and mounted inside protective archival plastic.
How Old Are They?
They probably date from the amateur minstrel period which flourished from the 1920s to 1950s.
