Description Technical Specs

Vintage Wooden Minstrel Style Bones
Matched set of 4 in excellent condition

The first time we acquired vintage bones like these was back in May, 2011. They came from a guitar dealer in Vancouver, Washington who said this about the provenance of the instruments:
"I received them with a lap steel [guitar] from the son of the owner after his father died at an old age. I purchased these in Washington state. This is all the info that I know on these."

Since that time we have encountered a few more sets from other sellers that are indistinguishable from these instruments. And that is what you are seeing on this product page. Yes, we could shoot photos of these identical bones and post them on a new product page that is exactly like the other. But posting identical items on separate product pages would cause confusion. So we are treating sets of these particular vintage bones as a re-stockable inventory item.

The bones are black stained hardwood, probably maple. They are vintage with light wear in excellent condition. They appear factory made and not hand carved. Can't say for sure, but more likely than not, they were originally purchased via mail-order from a specialty supply house that served the amateur minstrel show market.

How Old Are They?
They probably date from the amateur minstrel period which flourished from the 1920s to 1950s.

Features
  • Probably Maple: Produces nice warm sound that listeners and musicians like.
  • Matched Set: 2 pairs, 4 individual bones.
  • Minstrel Style Design: Still popular after 150 years.
