This pair of natural bones was acquired in January 2018 from the owner in the United Kingdom.

Tone
The sharp tone they produce is characteristic of instruments made of solid natural bone.

Short Design Style
One bone measures 6-3/4" in length, the other bone just slightly longer at 6-7/8." This short length is about average for instruments made from solid bone and ribs. Short natural bones were prevalent among Irish and seafaring players, but I can offer no verifiable references to substantiate the claim.

Duo-tapered Design: Thick in middle, tapered at both ends.
The bones are thicker in the middle than at the ends. They work fine for players with any size hands. Players with small hands often prefer tapered bones because it makes them lighter, thinner, and easier to grip between the knuckles.

Are These Whalebone?
The bones look and feel like ivory, but close inspection reveals a grain like whalebone objects seen in museums. Musical bones made of ox shin are somewhat similar. But ox shin musical bones are usually larger, and the grain is different. So my guess is they are either ox or whale bone. But whatever they are, they are fun to play and produce a nice crisp snappy sound.

How Old Are They?
Probably 20th century pre-1940s.The whaling industry was going strong in 1807, so there is a chance the set could date back from one-hundred to two-hundred years.
