Vintage Rosewood Minstrel Style Bones
Matched set of 4. Possible burnt cork residue.

This pair of ebony minstrel style bones was acquired in November 2019 from an antique dealer out of Texas.
"We found these in a box at a small country auction in Burnham, Maine. This auction gets consignors from all over New England. I’m afraid that’s all I know. Best, Joe"

Description

Looks like dark aged rosewood. Quite heavy, sinks in water. Several minor "age" cracks. One bone less curvy than standard. One bone more curvy than standard. So possibly hand crafted. Generates strong sharp tone. Was able to flake off black carbon-like material from surface. I'm guessing compressed burnt cork. A really intriguing set of nice playing bones.

How Old Are They?

Relatively thin and wide shape similar to my favorite set of vintage ebony minstrel style bones which were associated with a photograph showing a 1907 reunion of GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Civil War veterans. The rosewood is clearly old. Wishful thinking maybe, but this set might date back to the Civil War.
Features
  • Vintage Instruments: Rosewood hardwood.
  • Possible black cork residue.
  • Produces sharp strong tone.
  • Minstrel Style Design: Still popular after 150 years.
