Vintage Maple Busk Style Bones
Extra long, like corset "busk" stays from whaling era

This pair of maple busk style bones was acquired in April 2019 from a nice couple in Nashville, Tennessee.
"Made in the late 1800s by Mr. Ed King in Nashville, Tennessee. My great grandfather (Charles Brown) had them made for his son, Wallace Brown, and he played them for many years. They have not been played in over 80 years and my aunt has had them for many years. They are made of a light tan wood and you can see and feel the indentions where they were held."

Description

Extremely rare set with a history. One bone in each pair has a groove, presumably a guide to help position your fingers. At 9-1/2 inches in length, this set of bones is a little short for a corset busk, but mighty long for rhythm bones!

How Old Are They?
Corset busks were popular from the 16th to mid 19th century. Sailors during the whaling era carved scrimshaw busks from whale bone for their sweethearts back home. The previous owner says this set was made in the late 1800s. Whether the design was inspired from corset busks is only a guess.
Features
  • Vintage Instruments: Maple hardwood.
  • Produces warm tone.
  • Busk Style: Extra long, like corset "busk" stays from whaling era.
