Vintage Wooden Minstrel Style Bones
Matched set of 4 in excellent condition, possibly black-stained mahogany

These apparently vintage bones were acquired in March, 2014 from a seller in the town of Olean (first settled by Europeans around 1765), located in Cattaraugus County near the Allegheny River in Western New York State. The seller said this about the provenance of the instruments:

"They were my grandfather's, and they are not anything that was made in the last 30 years. I'm reasonably sure that it is just an ebony finish over hardwood."

The bones display a straight-grained surface which delivers a loud, fairly sharp tone. Not absolutely positive, but we doubt if they are ebony. They appear to be newly stained or black painted hardwood, possibly mahogany. If the paint is not new, then they are in mint condition. But our guess is they are vintage bones with fresh black paint. They appear hand carved and sport a dihedral angle which suggests they might have been steam bent. But steam bent or not, the dihedral makes them rather special.

How Old Are They?
They probably date from the amateur minstrel period which flourished from the 1920s to 1950s.
