Burnt Cork: Or The Amateur Minstrel
By Frank Dumont (1848-1919)
Published by Wehman Brothers (copyright 1881)

Did you ever wonder what kind of jokes and stories went on at those mysterious old-time minstrel shows? If so, then this rare vintage nineteenth century minstrel how-to book is for you. Originally published for wannabe minstrels and amateur minstrels, the book is loaded with gags, stump speeches, conundrums, monologs, skits, and funny stories.

This 128 page softcover book also includes words and music to a minstrel song composed by the author entitled Happy Uncle Rufus. Includes stage directions, casting, scenery, and graphic diagrams to a number of sketches. The last 14 pages is an illustrated catalog showing numerous books published by Wehman Brothers. Book has beautifully illustrated cover with nice drawing of minstrel with proverbial banjo on his knee.

From the Frontispiece
A collection of Humerous Speeches, End Men's Jokes, Conundrums, Recitations and Farces, Finales for "First Part," and a full and complete description of everything necessary to arrange a minstrel entertainment.

About the Author
Frank Dumont was the author of hundreds of humorous skits and a number of musical shows.

He enjoyed a long career as a minstrel and manager of minstrel companies and was perhaps a more prolific composer of songs, jokes, and afterpieces than anyone in the field.

He was a tenor singer and the last of the old-time minstrels. He began with George Christy as a boy singer and his career included stints with Arlington and Donniker's Minstrels; Cross, Fish and Dumont's Minstrels; Ned Davis' Minstrels; Dashington and Kling's Minstrels; Duprez and Benedict's Minstrels; Carncross; Sweatman's Minstrels; San Francisco Minstrels; and Lew Dockstader.
Dumont moved to Philadelphia in 1881 and remained there until his death.

He retired from the stage on Christmas Day, 1918. Frank Dumont died of heart failure in the box office at his theater on March 17, 1919, during a performance of his last skit.
