Unfinished Whamdiddle Cocobolo Bones, Classic Long (wide), Unfinished
Fun do-it-yourself project - just sand and rattle away!

Save 8 Bucks off the Price of Finished Bones!
These unfinished bones are manufactured from Cocobolo hardwood by Rick Fogel, a master luthier with a graduate degree in Physics. His finished Cocobolo bones sell for $39.97. So finish them yourself and save eight bucks.

    Finishing Instructions
    1. Sand with medium sandpaper (100 grit).
    2. Sand with fine sandpaper (150 grit).
    3. Sand with very-fine sandpaper (220 grit). (Rick scrapes them smooth in step 3 with a very sharp hunting knife instead).

    4. Your bones are now ready to play. If you want a durable protective finish, then follow additional steps below.

    5. Rub with commercial woodworking oil or paste wax such as Minwax, carnauba wax, beeswax, shellac, butcherblock oil, or other vegetable-based wood preparation. Follow manufacturer's directions or ask your local woodworking store for advice. Rick rubs Whamdiddle bones with marine spar varnish, lets them dry, and calls them done.
    6. If desired, buff for high gloss finish. Use soft rag or buffing wheel with tripoli polishing compound.

Cocobolo is a luxurious exotic wood that delivers a remarkably powerful low tone.

Cocobolo ranks high among my favorite musical woods because of the rich full tone they produce. The material is quite hard and dense, and even a large block will produce a clear musical tone when struck. Its fine texture and oily look and feel stand up well to repeated handling.

This beautiful hardwood from Central America is typically orange or reddish-brown in color, often with a figuring of darker irregular traces weaving through the wood.

Cocobolo wood has a specific gravity of over 1.0, hence it will sink in water.

Figures are approximate (but pretty darn close)--
    Width: 1" to 1-1/4"
Specific Gravity: 1.10 ( Strongest Tone)

    Density: 68 pcf (Strong Tone)
    Hardness: 1136 Janka (Dull Tone)
