Vintage Tin Cup for Musical Washboard
Get a vintage tin cup from the turn-of-the-century, maybe earlier. Or maybe later...
Are These Genuine Antiques Or Not?
I am not an expert on vintage tin cups. But the folks I acquired them from swear these are vintage items and not reproductions.
Several of the cups came from a dealer who calls them "turn-of-the-century Adirondack tin camp cups." He tells me he got them from a museum auction. Other cups came from an "old logging camp" auction. And other cups came from places unknown. I don't know enough about antique tin cups to verify if they came from some ancient camp ground or just sat out in the alley the past year or so.
This photo of a Civil War era tin cup comes from Gettysburg National Military Park. It looks remarkably similar to the tin cups above. But the bottom of this cup is flat (not visible in photo). The bottom of the vintage cups I sell on this page are ringed with a raised lip. So although the cups I sell are indeed vintage, an expert on Civil War provenance tells me the raised bottom rim style does not date back to the Civil War.
Low Cost
Twenty bucks is about the same price you will pay for a good reproduction tin cup made by a modern tin smith. So I guess it really doesn't make any difference if these are bona fide antiques or not.
Why is the price so low? Because I get the cups in bulk lots and from estate sales.
Don't Drink From These Tin Cups
Sure, these vintage tin cups would be great around the campfire at your next re-enactment event. But if you want one as a drinking vessel, then get yourself a shiny new reproduction tin cup to drink from instead.
For two reasons:
First, back in the old days, tin cups were bright and shiny because they were still new. Only ne'er-do-wells drank from dingy cups like these.
Second, authentic vintage tin cups were made with solder that contains lead. Lead is a health hazard. So if you are looking for a period tin drinking cup, then get yourself a shiny new reproduction model instead.
All in all, these tin cups appear in good shape for items that have been hangin' out a hundred years or so. All are weathered. Some show rust spots and minor dents. And they all look like they have been around the block a few times, as should be expected.
In any event, these vintage tin cups make a great sounding addition to your washboard - and that is what it is all about.
Features
Traditional Design: Produces distinctive tone you can't get from just any ol' metal cup.
Vintage Tin Cup: Like you might find at a fine antique shop.
Weathered Finish: Looks like an old tin cup because it is an old tin cup.
