Vintage Distressed Rosewood
The shorter half of this pair of rosewood bones was purchased from an antique dealer who acquired them in 2001 from an estate sale in Massachusetts.
The estate was probably from Central Mass where there are many folks of Irish decent.
The unusual bone came associated with a pair of vintage ebony bones which are now in my private collection. I can't help but wonder if the compressed black markings scattered all about the surface are the remains of burnt cork. If you are a chemist who knows a cost-effective way to test the substance, I hope you will give me a shout. Another unusual aspect of the shorter bone are the patterns of scalloped distress marks. The pictures make them seem quite large, but most are barely detectable. In any case, the markings do not affect playability. This bone is quite solid and even though it is shorter than the other bone, it is noticeably
heavier.
The longer bone is similar to other vintage rosewood bones in my private collection. I am embarrassed to report that I cannot recall where I obtained this particular unmatched bone.
Mismatched as they are, this pair of handcrafted vintage instruments produce a sharp clear tone typical of rosewood.
Features
Handcrafted: Quality vintage craftsmanship
Shorter bone: Unusual scallop distress mark patterning.
Minstrel Style Design: Still popular after 150 years.
