Technical Specs
Grandfather's Vintage Ebony Bones
This full matched set of four silky smooth ebony minstrel-style bones came from the man's granddaughter who lives in Birmingham, Alabama:
These date back at least to the 1930's or earlier as they were my grandfather's.
Amateur minstrel shows were all the rage during the 1930s, and this set of bones probably appeared in some of them. You will find one minor 1/8" chip at the corner of one bone. And one bone has a 1-1/4" scrape along one edge. (See photos.) But overall this set of ebony bones is in typically fine condition.
How Old Are They?
The 1897 Sears catalog sold sets of seven-inch ebony bones and this might be one of them. From the granddaughter's statement above we can assume they at least go back to the 1930s. Then again, I always like to think my vintage ebony or rosewood bones date back to the Civil War, even if it is just wishful thinking.
