Bob's Vintage Rosewood Bones
On exhibit at the Grammy Museum
This pair of vintage rosewood bones was a gift from Bob. Bob is a former percussionist, now in his 80's. He took violin lessons for a few years from my brother-in-law, Pete Pancella.
A couple years ago Bob attended a performance called "Beatin' on those Bones!" at the Havner Public Library in Alton, Illinois. The show featured me on bones, Pete on fiddle and his wife, Mary on guitar. I did not know Bob at the time. But after the concert Bob came up to me and we chatted about bones. I have a foggy recollection of him talking about an old pair of bones he had at home. Some time later, at a family gathering, Pete handed me a pair of vintage rosewood bones and said, "These are from Bob."
Each year during the winter holidays, Pete's "Christmas Caravan" entertains folks at nursing homes. The musicians are his students, friends and family. I think it would be neat to tell Bob at the next Christmas Caravan that his vintage rosewood bones are on display in a traveling Grammy Museum exhibit.
How Old Are They?
The fine surface resembles other vintage rosewood (and ebony) bones I have seen with a characteristic handcrafted finish that appears scraped - not sanded. The combination of that fine finish plus rich rosewood patina makes me guess the pair dates between the Civil War and 1890s.
Features
Handcrafted: Quality vintage craftsmanship
Dark Patina: Elegant color typical of vintage rosewood.
Characteristic Sound: Produce distinctive sharp rosewood clicks.
Minstrel Style Design: Still popular after 150 years.
